Hazel and Forney Creek

Hazel Creek

HAZEL CREEK is a historic and highly regarded fishing destination located within the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It’s known for its pristine and secluded ambiance, making it a bucket list stream for many anglers. The Creek is home to various trout species including Brown, Rainbow, and Brook Trout, as well as Small-Mouth Bass. It is also renowned for its legendary Brown Trout Size and is highly sought after by fishing enthusiasts.

Getting to Hazel Creek can only be done by boat, launching from Cable Boat Ramp or hiking, Hazel Creek Trail from Lakeview Drive, Clingmans Dome, or Fontana Dam, adding to its remoteness and allure. Due to its relatively isolated location, many anglers plan a multi-day camping trip to fully immerse themselves in the Hazel Creek experience.

In addition to excellent fishing Hazel Creek holds historical significance as a former logging and mining community. Exploring the remnants of this community also adds a layer of interest and adventure to fishing trips in the area.

Overall, Hazel Creek is a remarkable fishing destination that offers a unique blend of angling opportunities, natural beauty, and historical significance. Whether you choose to make the journey here by boat or by hiking into the area, a multi-day camping trip is recommended to fully appreciate all that Hazel Creek has to offer.

Forney Creek

FORNEY CREEK offers outstanding fishing, and receives very little fishing pressure due to the amount of effort it takes to reach the creek. Brown trout thrive on the lower sections of the stream, with rainbow trout found throughout the watershed. Brook trout are found in high elevations and most tributaries. Forney Creek is a big watershed and has many smaller fishable tributaries. Notable tributaries are Advalorem Branch, Jonas Creek, Steeltrap Creek, and Whitemans Glory Creek.

Many backcountry campsites are located on Forney Creek and make for great multi-day excursions. Forney Creek was all but destroyed by logging operations before the creation of GSNP.
