Taxes

Checkout tax and your business’s income tax are different. Provide accurate listing information and confirm the marketplace’s responsibilities before assuming tax is collected or remitted for you.

General guidance. Fields marked "where enabled" may not appear in your account.

#Before you start

  • This is general operational information, not tax advice. Ask a qualified tax professional about your business and selling locations.
  • The merchant controls marketplace-wide tax settings. A tax plugin being installed does not establish the legal collection or remittance obligations.
  • Physical flies, artwork, apparel, digital content, lodging and guiding can be taxed differently depending on location.

#Steps

  1. Identify what the buyer receives: a physical item, digital download, subscription, service, lodging or private-water access.
  2. Supply accurate product and business-location information through the appropriate secure forms. Do not put a tax ID in a public listing.
  3. Use only the tax status or tax class directed by the merchant when the field is available. Do not choose a reduced or exempt class just to lower checkout tax.
  4. Ask the merchant whether applicable checkout tax is collected and remitted by the marketplace, or whether any obligations remain with you.
  5. Confirm whether displayed prices include tax and whether shipping or lodging-related taxes are handled by the configured system. Do not hard-code a separate tax charge into your description.
  6. Keep order, refund, fee, payout and expense records. Reconcile gross sales with net payouts rather than treating the payout total as the whole tax record.
  7. Have a tax professional review income-tax reporting, registrations, exemptions and local lodging or occupancy taxes relevant to your business.

#Example: revenue versus a payout

Illustrative accounting amounts only; these are not marketplace fee or tax rates:

An order can contain product revenue, shipping and collected tax. The payout may be lower after marketplace fees, refunds or adjustments. Keep the order-level breakdown and payout statement, not just the deposit total.

#Sales tax is not income tax

Sales or transaction tax may be collected at checkout under applicable law and marketplace arrangements. Income tax concerns your business’s income and expenses. One does not replace the other.

A marketplace-facilitator rule may assign certain collection duties to the marketplace, but it does not automatically remove every registration, reporting or other tax obligation from a vendor.

#Lodging, private water and digital products

Occupancy, accommodation or local lodging taxes may apply separately from ordinary sales tax. Confirm what is collected, who remits it and whether the enabled checkout covers every required charge.

Guiding, fishing access, lessons and downloadable or subscription content require the correct treatment for the location and product. Do not assume that being virtual means tax-exempt.

#Reports and corrections

Where available, compare Orders, Commission and Statements with your own records. Payment-provider tax documents can show amounts that differ from deposits; discuss discrepancies with your accountant.

If tax is missing or looks wrong, provide the merchant with a private order reference and the relevant product/destination details. Do not issue an off-platform correction or change marketplace-wide tax rules.

#Troubleshooting

The tax field is hidden.

The merchant may manage it centrally. Ask for the correct product classification rather than trying to work around permissions.

No tax appears at checkout.

That alone does not prove the purchase is exempt or that a tax setup is working. The merchant must confirm the configuration and applicable rules.

My tax report does not match my deposits.

Gross sales, collected tax, fees, refunds and payout timing can differ. Reconcile the underlying records with a qualified professional.
